New York restricts AI in public schools: Ban until 8th grade

Over half a million students and teachers in New York will face new restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence during the 2026–2027 academic year.

The city's public schools, the largest school system in the US, will impose a moratorium on the use of generative AI by students in grades 2-K through 8.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the upcoming period will be used to study the impact of artificial intelligence in education and to better understand how the technology is affecting students and the learning process.

The decision comes at a time when the use of AI tools by students has become a major debate in the US. Supporters emphasize that the technology can aid learning and research, while critics warn of copying, technology addiction and the weakening of critical thinking.

Unlike schools that are trying to set rules for the use of AI, New York has chosen a more restrictive approach, establishing a one-year evaluation period before determining future rules.
