Kosovo heads for elections again, Sejdiu fails to secure quorum, Kurti insists

The quorum of 80 deputies for the election of the president of Kosovo will not be provided by the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo.

On August 31, the parties proposed Bekim Sejdiu, a former judge of the Constitutional Court, as a candidate, who on Tuesday did not receive the support of six LDK deputies.

For the Vetëvendosje Movement, the agreement is still valid and Albin Kurti intends to meet again with the leader of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku.

"We will hold meetings and gatherings, for us, the political agreement is still valid," said Albin Kurti.

However, the actions of LDK deputies, according to the party's leader, Lumir Abdixhiku, are leading the country to elections.

"Yesterday, the solution of the President of Kosovo was rejected. The vote for the candidate proposed by the LDK was rejected and, with this rejection, the fate of the country was also determined, new elections. Anyone can do harm. For this, here is the hand," Abdixhiku wrote, while expressing indignation with his six deputies.

Recent developments, according to experts, indicate that the country is closer to new elections than to an agreement on a president.

"It can be considered that there has been a failure and at the same time that the country is closer to new elections than there can be to a new agreement. This entire situation is in the hands of Mr. Kurti, depending on how he wants to orient the situation," said analyst Arbnor Sadiku.

If Albin Kurti wants to send the country to elections or find a solution for the presidency, experts say there are two options.

"If he wants to go to the elections, he can send the country immediately. If he wants to find a solution, with this candidate he can find some votes by negotiating with some MPs of the parties separately or even change the candidate altogether," said analyst Arbnor Sadiku.

Albin Kurti, as the leader of the election-winning party, the Vetevendosje Movement, has the door to cooperation closed to the Democratic Party of Kosovo, who have said they will remain in opposition. Meanwhile, the Alliance has six conditions, among which is the acceptance of the American gas project; without these being met, they say they will not help Kurti in electing the president.

Kosovo held its last extraordinary elections on June 7, after failing to elect a new president at the beginning of the year.
