Requested suspension of detention terms, GJKKO Appeal overturns Veliaj

The Special Court of Appeal rejected the request of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who opposed the decisions taken in two sessions to suspend pre-trial detention terms.

Specifically, in the hearings of May 25 and June 10, the Special Court suspended the detention terms for the only arrested defendant, Erion Veliaj, due to the absence of the lawyers of the two other co-defendants.

The decision was challenged in court by lawyer Plarent Ndreca, who argued that the decision was unfair, as Veliaj was not the reason for the postponement of the hearings, reports journalist Klodiana Lala.

But Special Judge Saida Dollani dismissed this request, paving the way for Veliaj to appeal to the Supreme Court. Erion Veliaj is being tried on 13 criminal charges and has been held in detention since February 10, 2025.
