6.7 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia, strong tremors shake island

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi today.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic tremors were recorded at 10:27 local time, with the epicenter southeast of the city of Palu, in Central Sulawesi province.

The earthquake was relatively shallow, causing tremors to be felt over a wide area. So far, there are no reports of casualties, injuries or material damage.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation and conducting field inspections to assess the possible consequences. Indonesia is located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", one of the most seismically active regions in the world, where earthquakes are frequent.
