"Albania has given us guarantees for Zvërnec", Kos: We will

The Albanian government has given guarantees that every EU regulation regarding nature protection in the Sazan and Zvernec projects will be implemented in detail, Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said in a statement to journalists in Brussels.

In the statement also distributed by Prime Minister Edi Rama, Kos also talks about the protests, describing the freedom to protest as very important.

“Albania has made significant progress in environmental protection and this progress is valuable, recognized and should be protected. In such situations it is important to work with the facts.  The European Commission is in constant contact with the authorities, not only with Prime Minister Rama. As for the Pishe Poro – Nartë project, like all other projects, it must comply with the legal framework and the standards set out in the environmental chapter, Chapter 27 of the accession process.  This chapter is currently open. Before it is closed, the situation must be fully clarified, while the closure of this chapter is foreseen by the end of 2027. Our role will be to assess whether the relevant standards have been met.  Until then, I encourage the Albanian authorities to continue taking steps to close the chapter. We have received the guarantee from the Albanian Government that a full environmental impact assessment will be carried out.  The fact that this is happening while Albania is in the accession process is important. This process is legally and politically binding and subject to continuous monitoring and evaluation. Therefore, it constitutes the strongest guarantee that Albania's nature and environment will be protected in accordance with European standards.  You know how important the right to protest is for us. It is a fundamental right in our Union and I am pleased to see that this is being respected in Albania", declared EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
