69.8% of Swiss vote against the Environmental Responsibility Initiative

The size of the "no" vote in the cantons of Neuchâtel, Geneva, Vaud and Jura was smaller than in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino.
The environmental responsibility initiative, initiated by the Young Greens, suffered a heavy defeat at the ballot box in today's referendum. 69% of citizens voted against it.
With 70 percent, the Young Greens' initiative was rejected. This is not surprising, says political scientist Lukas Golder. But the defeat is clearer than one might expect. The initiative apparently found support only in the left-green camp.
The very low level of interest was also reflected in voter turnout: only 38 percent turned out to vote. This is below the long-term average. According to the BFS, this average is 47 percent between 2011 and 2023.
The Young Greens' initiative was rejected in all cantons, with the lowest rejection in Basel-Stadt (55 percent). The "no" votes in the cantons of Neuchâtel, Geneva, Vaud and Jura were smaller than in German-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. The canton of Schwyz recorded the highest rejection rate of the initiative at over 84 percent.
The initiative was clearly rejected in the vast majority of municipalities. The municipalities of Riemenstalden SZ and Ederswiler JU even scored 100 percent votes against.
Large cities such as Geneva, Basel and Zurich also voted against. Only about ten municipalities across Switzerland voted for the initiative.
