Analysis/ Is the Russia-Ukraine war entering a more dangerous phase of escalation?

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears ready to escalate the war in Ukraine amid a stalemate on the battlefield and growing discontent with the war in Russian society, according to recent analyses, Reuters reported.

According to estimates, the Kremlin is aiming to change the narrative of the conflict by intensifying airstrikes on Kiev, with the aim of strengthening domestic support and convincing public opinion that Russia is winning the war, which is now in its fifth year.

Russian warnings of "continuous and systematic" missile attacks on the Ukrainian capital, as well as calls for the evacuation of foreign embassies from Kiev, are considered signals for the expansion of the offensive, despite the high costs and international reactions.

Massive maneuvers by Russian nuclear forces and harsh statements towards Ukraine's European allies have highlighted, according to analysts, Moscow's intention to increase military pressure.

On the battlefield, Russian advances along the 1,000-kilometer front have stalled, while Ukrainian forces have launched counterattacks and recaptured some territory.

The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) estimates that the character of the war is changing in favor of Ukraine, at least for the time being.

The stalemate on the front is seen as an obstacle to Moscow's stated objectives of taking the Donetsk region, while Ukraine has intensified long-range attacks on Russian energy infrastructure and military facilities.

According to analysts, the war is also affecting the Russian economy, which is facing slowing growth, rising taxes and pressure on the state budget, while the civilian sector is showing signs of slowing development, due to the dominance of the military industry.

Experts also warn that difficulties in recruiting soldiers and rising casualties could force the Kremlin to increase the mobilization of human and material resources.
