EU message to Belgrade: Reduce tensions! Massive protests on Saturday, Vučić threatens with arrests

The European Union has called on Belgrade to de-escalate tensions and respect the right to free assembly, stressing the importance of an inclusive dialogue for Serbia's European future. This comes after President Vučić warned of tough measures against protesters, while students and citizens are organizing a mass protest on March 15 in Belgrade.
Saturday's protest in Belgrade is expected to be violent according to Serbian authorities, as President Aleksandar Vučić has threatened protesters with a harsh reaction from law enforcement institutions, warning of numerous arrests.
Faced with this situation, the European Union calls on official Belgrade to reduce tensions.
"This also concerns the freedom of assembly as a fundamental right," the EU information office said in a response to Radio Free Europe.
The EU also said that citizen participation plays a key role in the development of a healthy and democratic society, including promoting transparency and accountability.
In recent days, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has warned several times that "the opposition will organize major violence on March 15" and that "all those who participate in it will be arrested."
"The EU consistently calls for a reduction in tensions, creating conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders, including political actors, institutions and members of civil society, to address the reforms necessary for Serbia's future in the EU," the response from Brussels states.
EU officials confirmed that they are closely following the internal political situation in Serbia and the large mobilization of students and other groups.
When asked about Vučić's statements that the West is behind the "colorful revolution", as he calls the mobilization of students and citizens in Serbia, EU officials stressed that "disinformation and political rhetoric, including those against the EU and member states, have no place on the path to integration into the Union."
Serbian students have called for a rally, which they have described as "the largest gathering ever", in the Serbian capital on March 15th.
Students from different regions of Serbia have already set off on foot to Belgrade, who will travel dozens of kilometers to participate in the rally in Belgrade.
Students in Serbia have been organizing rallies in several major cities in Serbia for 4 months, demanding responsibility for the deaths of 15 people in Novi Sad, after the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1, 2024.
