Belgium bans display and sale of cigarettes in supermarkets

A new law passed in Belgium bans the display of cigarettes and tobacco products in stores, while supermarkets with an area of over 400 square meters are prohibited from selling them at all.
This measure, which came into effect on Tuesday, aims to limit impulse purchases and reduce tobacco addiction.
Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke stated that the main objective is to create a smoke-free generation by 2040.
He clarified that cigarettes and vapes are not banned for sale, but cannot be visible in stores – consumers must specifically ask for them from sellers.
Retailers are facing difficulties in implementing the new rules, as no instructions or equipment have been provided for concealing tobacco products.
Meanwhile, citizens are divided on the effectiveness of the measure: some believe it will help prevent smoking among young people, while others think that addiction cannot be stopped simply by hiding cigarettes from consumers' eyes.
Meanwhile, Belgium has begun banning single-use e-cigarettes on January 1, while lawmakers are considering the next phase of the plan - banning smoking on public terraces.
