Bulgaria to use the euro from January 2026, citizens express their doubts

On January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will become the 21st country to use the euro as its official currency.

However, a good portion of citizens express concerns that this step could lead to price increases and worsen instability in the poorest country in the European Union.

Supporters of this measure argue that adopting the euro will boost the economy, strengthen ties with the West and protect the country from Russian influence.

The last country to join the euro was Croatia in 2023, while the common currency was first introduced on January 1, 2002 in 12 countries.

According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, 49% of Bulgarians are against the euro. After the hyperinflation of the 1990s, Bulgaria had pegged its currency to the Deutsche Mark and then to the euro, making the country dependent on the European Central Bank.

A member of the European Union since 2007, Bulgaria entered the so-called "waiting room" for the adoption of the euro in 2020, at the same time as Croatia.
