Bulgaria approves the law, bans the promotion of the LGBT movement in schools and kindergartens
The Bulgarian parliament has approved an amendment to the national education law that will ban the promotion of "non-traditional" sexual relationships or orientations, as well as gender changes, in schools or kindergartens.
The move, which was backed by a majority of lawmakers in the country's parliament, has sparked outrage from LGBT advocacy groups in Bulgaria and the EU, which are demanding that Brussels "take action" against Sofia.
The bill passed two readings on Wednesday after four hours of heated debate, according to local media. In the second and final reading, 135 deputies supported the legislation, 57 voted against and eight abstained.
The amendment, tabled by the nationalist Renaissance Party, was approved by most parties in the legislature, including the center-right GERB-SDS, the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party and most members of the center-right DPS.
The liberal PP-DB was the only party in parliament that voted against.
The amendment prohibits the "propaganda, popularization and incitement" of all ideas related to "non-traditional sexual orientation or the determination of gender identity other than biological," according to local media reports.
The legislation defines non-traditional sexual orientation as anything "other than" heterosexual attraction.
The head of the Renaissance Party, Kostadin Kostadinov, claimed that LGBT ideology is not "humane" and that it was "anti-humane" to "promote" non-traditional relationships in schools.
