A vital Atlantic Ocean current system that affects weather around the world could be destroyed by the late 2030s, scientists say in a new study.
This would be a disaster on a planetary scale that would transform weather and climate. Several studies in recent years have suggested that the current system, or the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), may be on the verge of collapse, weakened by warmer ocean temperatures and the resulting salinity breakdown. from human-caused climate change.
The research uses a recent model to estimate when it might collapse, suggesting a shutdown could occur between 2037 and 2064.
" This is really disturbing. All the negative side effects of anthropogenic climate change, they will continue to continue, like more heat waves, more droughts, more floods. Then if you also have a collapse of the AMOC ... the climate will be distorted even more, " said René van Westen, a marine and atmospheric researcher at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and co-author of the study.
