FBI arrests 'new Escobar' in Mexico, was hiding under the protection

The FBI has arrested one of the most wanted international figures in Mexico, Colombian drug lord Ryan James Wedding, for whom a $15 million bounty had been placed.

Wedding, a former Olympic champion and listed on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, had been on the run for years and is suspected of running a vast transnational drug trafficking network, as well as organizing several murders.

According to US authorities, he had been living in Mexico for more than a decade, under the protection of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. His arrest ends a years-long search for a Canadian criminal whom law enforcement officials have compared to Pablo Escobar.

The news was confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel through a post on the social network X. He stated that Wedding is the sixth person from the 10 Most Wanted list to be arrested in a year.

“Ryan James Wedding was arrested last night in Mexico and is being transported to the United States to face justice,” Patel wrote, thanking the Department of Justice and the FBI's Los Angeles office.

According to the BBC, Wedding had been wanted since 2024 on serious charges of cocaine trafficking and murder.

FBI Deputy Director for Los Angeles, Akil Davis, stated that Wedding is responsible for trafficking approximately 60 tons of cocaine through California to Canada. He announced that so far 36 people have been arrested for involvement in this criminal organization, while the US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Wedding and 18 of his associates.
