A court in the canton of Valais has ordered the release from custody of Jacques Moretti, co-owner of the bar in the Crans Montana ski resort, where 40 people, mostly young people, lost their lives on New Year's Eve.

The release was decided after Moretti paid a guarantee of 215 thousand euros. The court announced that the detention measure has been lifted, while restrictive measures have been imposed on him to avoid the risk of escape.

Like his wife Jessica Moretti, who was not arrested, Jacques Moretti has been placed under strict obligations, including:

prohibition of leaving Switzerland,

submission of personal identification documents,

daily reporting to a police station,

payment of a guarantee of approximately 200 thousand Swiss francs.

According to foreign media, Moretti had been in custody since January 9, as part of the investigation into the tragedy that left 40 dead and 116 injured.

The Court emphasized that, in accordance with the principle of the presumption of innocence, every suspect must remain free until the conclusion of the trial, except in cases where there is a high risk of absconding or obstructing the investigation.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire at the "Le Constellation" bar was caused by fireworks used indoors, which ignited the acoustic insulation material on the basement ceiling.

Authorities are investigating whether the bar complied with safety and fire protection regulations, as well as the owners' responsibilities for the tragic event.
