"The boy was infected with a virus"/ Kledi Kadiu's touching story

Renowned Albanian dancer, Kledi Kadiu, recently spoke in an interview about his family life, his two children, and especially his son, Gabriel, who suffers from a disorder as a result of a virus he contracted when he was only 11 days old.

Kledi first shared the beautiful memories of the birth of his daughter, Lea, born in Rome.

"When I took her in my arms, I was afraid of hurting her, she was fragile, small, soft. It was one of those moments that anyone who has experienced it knows will always remain in their father's memory," he said.

Today, Lea is an inseparable part of his artistic life, accompanying him to events and trips, while choosing to pursue hip-hop rather than classical ballet like his father.

"Lea and I have a strong bond, especially recently when I take her with me to all the ballet events I do. Especially when we shoot in different places in Italy and I'm happy, because the travel experience remains with her. She likes ballet, she doesn't do my genre, classical, but she does hip-hop," he said.

But their lives took a painful turn after the birth of his son, Gabriel, born in August 2021.

"Everything went well until the last moment. Then, suddenly, something changed," he says. Just 11 days after birth, Gabriel was rushed to the hospital, in intensive care with a code red alert, after a virus had passed from his nose to his brain, causing serious damage.

"The boy was born in August 2021, 6 years apart from the girl. Gabriel turned 4 this summer. We were expecting Gabriel, it wasn't a surprise like Lea's. Everything was going well, until the last moment. Then on September 11, Sharlota called me after she had gone for a walk, telling me that the boy "is doing some strange things, it's better to go to the emergency room, we're going, but you come too.

I'm usually not at home, on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and I went there, for urgent help, it was still covid time and not many people could come in. He told me to wait for me, and this waiting for me was suicide, why did I have to wait so long, such a long answer to say what was happening. That difficult time we went through, remained. The boy was only 11 days old. He was hospitalized, in intensive care with a red code.

"The doctors said that it was a 1 in 70 thousand chance that this virus could have happened, that it went from the nose to the brain and there it made some inappropriate movements. The whole celebration of having a child was changed, it turned into a pain. The fact that he was so small, the parents' refusal to accept why this should happen to him, to me. It was something we couldn't stop. That time was also good for his luck, because there could have been other reactions," Kledi said on "Mirembrema Yje" with Arbana Osmani.

He said that today Gabriel attends kindergarten and lives a normal life, with the help of a person who cares for him the most. Kledi said that this challenge has made them even stronger as a family and has strengthened the bond with his wife, Charlotte.

Kledi revealed that the boy still doesn't walk, but said he was hopeful that with technology that has advanced, there is good news for Gabriel and thousands of other children who can improve.

"He goes to kindergarten, it's normal for a child to have deficiencies, but hope is very high. I don't want to think about what would have happened if we weren't in Italy. For me, it doesn't really matter if we were in Italy, Albania or America, because it was a virus that took a turn, that's how they explained it to us, that it takes hold at one point and damages the brain, it has damaged his speech and movement. So far he still can't walk, but we hope that later, technology has advanced, there is some good news for Gabriel and thousands of other children. There are some elements that could be very improving.

What happened to Gabriel is not that they chose him, he was lucky to find a healthy family, me and Sharlota, who were much stronger than me. I was saying 'why, why'. Not because of me, because I had eliminated myself, but because of Gabriel. I didn't know where to look for the 'why'. Not from the doctors, they told us how the situation was. Parents cope by living, there is no one way, but love is. Who is that parent who doesn't love the child, these things can happen even when a child grows up. Love in the face of everything that life can give. Now Sharlota and I are even closer and we know which path we should take. Gabriel lives the life that everyone does, goes to a normal kindergarten, that there is a person who takes a little more care of Gabriel", the dancer confessed.

Asked how his daughter experienced her brother's situation, Kledi said that they explained the situation to Lea and she understood her brother's situation.

"We explained that Gabriel has had a very bad headache since he was little and that it left some signs that will be fixed over time. Lea is very sensitive and we understand the closeness they have, in the morning she gives him a kiss, he responds in his own way. We all feel the love," Kledi confessed.
