Zelensky: Frozen Russian assets should be used only for the reconstruction of

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday dismissed reports that Russia wants to use frozen US assets for its reconstruction, calling the idea "absurd" and reiterating that all frozen Russian funds should be used to rebuild Ukraine.

Speaking to Kyiv Post reporters via a messaging app, Zelensky was asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent statement - who had expressed a willingness to use frozen US assets worth about $5 billion - for reconstruction projects, including in Russia's Kursk region.

"We will certainly fight for the use of all frozen Russian assets - and this is absolutely right," Zelensky said.

"Russia is the aggressor. This is known by the whole world. They started this war and therefore Ukraine must recover from the consequences of Russian aggression," he said.

Zelensky said Kiev had repeatedly raised the issue with US officials, including about $5 billion worth of frozen American assets - insisting they should be used to rebuild Ukraine, not Russia.

"We have told the Americans many times that we expect these funds to be used for the reconstruction of Ukraine, because Ukraine is the country that suffered," he said.

The total value of Russian sovereign assets blocked worldwide is around 290 billion euros ($339 billion), most of which are held in a small number of EU and G7 jurisdictions, according to Ukraine's central bank.

The president said Moscow's stance seemed illogical, noting that the assets were frozen precisely because of Russia's invasion.
