Palestinian photojournalist and protagonist of Cannes Film Festival documentary

Palestinian artist and photojournalist Fatima Hassouna died yesterday at the age of 25 - during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza, according to the French daily Le Monde.

Hassouna is at the center of a documentary film directed by Sepideh Farsi, selected to premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

According to figures released by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on February 16, at least 157 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza – and many more have been injured since the start of the war.

Hassouna – who had gained international recognition – by reflecting on the impact of the Israeli military offensive on the civilian population of the Gaza Strip – appears as the protagonist in the documentary by Franco-Iranian director Sepideh Farsi, "Put your soul in your hand and walk."

Earlier, she had published impressive images of the sunset, taken from her home, accompanied by these words: "It's the first sunset in so long."

She was killed yesterday, April 16 – along with 10 members of her immediate family – during the bombing of their home – located in the Al-Touffah neighborhood, north of Gaza.

A multimedia graduate from the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza, Palestinian Hassouna had been documenting since October 7, 2023, the daily life of the residents of the enclave, to which Israel has banned access for foreign journalists.

She captured all the moments: the forced displacements following evacuation orders from the Israeli army, the devastation caused by the strikes, the deaths of her compatriots from the bombings, their return after the ceasefire from January 19 to March 18, but also the smiles of children among the ruins.

Since the start of the Israeli offensive, around 200 journalists have been killed. When contacted about Hassoun's death, the Israeli military said it was targeting "a Hamas member" involved in attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians.

France's Association for the Diffusion of Independent Cinema - which promotes films throughout the year in cinemas across France - issued a statement expressing "horror" at the news of Hassouna's death.

"We met Fatima Hassouna when we discovered Sepideh Farsi's film "Put Your Soul in Your Hand and Walk."

“Her smile was as magical as her perseverance: to bear witness, to photograph Gaza, to distribute food despite the bombs, the grief and the hunger. Her story reached us and we rejoiced. Yesterday we learned that an Israeli missile had targeted her building, killing Fatima and her family,” the Association said.
