Migrant boat sinks in England/ One person dies, 60 others rescued

A tragedy has struck the English Channel, where an overloaded and dangerously ill migrant boat has capsized off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. According to French authorities, one person has died and 61 survivors have been rescued during rescue operations.

A rescue team immediately intervened, sending three lifeboats to retrieve 50 survivors. Two people were also rescued by the British Border Force Ranger and nine others by an RNLI boat from Dungeness.

Among the survivors was a child and his mother, who were rushed to hospital after suffering hypothermia. The incident marks a rise in the number of dangerous crossings of the English Channel. By the end of April alone, more than 10,000 migrants had crossed the channel, highlighting the need for stronger action against people-smuggling gangs.

The leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, has committed the British government to "Destroy the Gangs" of smugglers who exploit migrants on this dangerous route.
