"State of crisis" is declared the word of the year in Germany

A jury of German experts has announced the word "Krisenmodus" (state of crisis) as the word of the year 2023, as a reference to the war in Ukraine and the Middle East, to global challenges and the decline of education standards in this country.
"Anti-Semitism" is ranked second, the German Language Association said on Friday, citing an increase in the use of the word since the attacks by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7.
Hamas, the group that rules Gaza, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
The expression "inability to read" is listed in third place, referring not only to illiteracy, but also to the increase in difficulties for people to understand complex texts.
According to the association that compiled the list, "the ranking reflects reality - and the reality is pretty grim."
According to her, society has been in a "state of crisis" since 2020, citing the coronavirus pandemic, Russia's war in Ukraine, Germany's education and energy crises, and Hamas' attacks on Israel in October.
Hamas militants have escalated the war with Israel after the attack they carried out on its territory on October 7, killing over 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages.
As a result, Israel has launched ground and air offensives in Gaza with 2.3 million inhabitants.
According to Palestinian health authorities, over 15,800 people have died as a result of Israeli attacks.
The Israeli army, on the other hand, blames Hamas for the killings, accusing it of operating in densely populated areas./ REL
