Polish general: The country must strengthen the army and prepare for war
Poland will need a much larger army if it is to defend itself against what appears to be an inevitable war for this generation, a senior Polish general has been quoted as saying.

The state news agency PAP quoted the chief of staff of the armed forces, General Wieslaw Kukula, as saying that the aging population makes it difficult to recruit new soldiers.

"Everything shows that we are the generation that must fight to protect our country. I and none of you intend to lose this war" , said General Kulula during a speech before the country's military academy at the University of Land Forces in Wroclaw.

"We will win the war and continue to build Poland, but something has to happen. We must increase the circle of the armed forces and prepare them for this kind of battle".

General Kukula said the demographic crisis will reduce the pace of recruitment.

"The power of the opponent is so great that we have to create a much bigger army, which means the activation of forced military service", Mr. Kukula is quoted as saying.

Currently, military service in Poland is not compulsory.

According to data from the Polish Ministry of Defense, by the end of this year Poland will have around 207,500 soldiers, a figure that makes it the third largest army of NATO countries in terms of personnel. The United States ranks first, followed by Turkey.

General Kukula said in July that Poland must prepare its military forces for a full-scale conflict. Poland's relations with Russia and Belarus have deteriorated significantly since Moscow began aggression against neighboring Ukraine in February 2022./ VOA
