German giant Bosch plans to cut 20,000 jobs, industry alarm

German industrial giant Bosch confirmed on Friday plans to cut 20,000 jobs, after the company's profits almost halved last year, according to Politico , skyweb.al reports.
The decision highlights the growing pressure on Germany's manufacturing sector, once the mainstay of the country's economy, and increases pressure on politicians in Berlin to find concrete solutions.
Official data released on Friday showed that unemployment in Germany, not adjusted for seasonal factors, rose to 6.6 percent, the highest level in 12 years. The number of unemployed people exceeded 3 million in January.
"Economic reality is also reflected in our results," said Bosch CEO Stefan Hartung, calling 2025 "a difficult and, in some cases, painful year" for the company, which is one of the main suppliers to the automotive industry.
The decision comes as Germany's auto industry is in deep decline. The sector, which has been the bedrock of German manufacturing for decades, is losing jobs at a rapid pace. A 2025 study by EY shows that more than 50,000 jobs in the automotive industry were cut last year alone.
The auto sector crisis has become a major political test for the government in Berlin and for Europe as a whole. The industry, once the pride of the German economy, is now facing numerous challenges, from current policies on electric vehicles and high energy costs to aggressive competition from Chinese manufacturers.
With supply chains weakening, the risk is shifting from falling profits to a long-term loss of competitiveness. As job cuts mount and investment is postponed, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government is facing growing pressure from workers, unions and industry leaders to overhaul Germany's industrial strategy.
Doubts are growing not only domestically, but also at the European level, over Germany's ability to maintain its role as one of the continent's leading economic powers.
