An immigration officer in the United Kingdom has been found to have been an illegal immigrant himself and is now facing serious criminal charges for stealing from migrants arriving in Britain in small boats across the English Channel, British media reported.
This is 36-year-old Besmir Matera, who is accused, along with four other immigration officers, of conspiracy to commit theft.
According to the prosecution, they are suspected of receiving money from migrants arriving in Dover after being rescued from dinghies in the Channel during 2021–2022.
Matera also faces additional charges of illegally entering the UK between 2003–2004, using a false identity in an asylum application, as well as possessing false documents, including passports and driving licences, at various times between 2011 and 2022.
According to the indictment, Matera entered Britain when he was 14 years old, on a school trip, and was later reported missing in Brighton after his peers from Albania had returned home. He had told authorities he was from Kosovo.
Prosecutor Rosalind Earis told Westminster Magistrates' Court that the defendants worked in a special immigration team, which dealt with migrants arriving by small boats, and that they allegedly collaborated to steal significant sums of money from the migrants' personal belongings and divide it among themselves.
In total, six officers have been charged in the case, while all have been suspended from duty.
They have been released on bail and will appear on February 26 at Southwark Crown Court for a pre-trial hearing.
