Former German minister floats idea of European atomic bomb: We must defend ourselves

Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer has proposed the creation of a joint European nuclear capacity, stating that Europe can no longer rely entirely on the security guarantees of the United States.
In an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper, Fischer said that the global situation has changed significantly and that the European Union must think seriously about its defense.
"American security guarantees are no longer as reliable as they used to be. Germany has a responsibility for leadership in Europe, but always together with other countries," he said.
Fischer explained that this is not about a German nuclear bomb, but about a common nuclear weapon of the European Union countries, as a means of defense in an increasingly uncertain international climate.
He stressed that disarmament is no longer a realistic alternative and that Europe must invest in military strengthening to guarantee its security.
"Only through force and deterrence can a potential attack by an aggressive neighbor be averted," Fischer said.
In his statements, the former German chief diplomat added that if he were young today, he would join the army.
"Times have changed. We are threatened and we must defend ourselves," he said, acknowledging that this stance contradicts his previous political beliefs.
