Greece/ Police dismantle a gang of human traffickers

Greek police have arrested 20 suspected members of a human trafficking gang linked to more than 500 cases of illegal entry, broadcaster ERTNews reported, citing Athens police.

It is reported that the migrants were provided with forged travel documents that allowed them to continue their journey to other European Union countries.

The gang is said to have earned around 4.0 million euros ($4.5 million) from its activities. According to reports, the leader of the gang, whose members are believed to be from Syria and Egypt, is among those arrested.

Special police forces searched several premises in the Athens metropolitan area, which also functioned as laboratories for forging travel documents.

Several forged passports, along with their stamps, were also seized. Large sums of money and technical equipment were also seized.

Greek investigators said the counterfeit passports were being sold for prices of more than 4,000 euros, depending on the quality.

Migrants from the Middle East and Africa arrive in Greece almost every day. Most of them intend to continue their journey to other EU countries.
