Hamas releases hostage with US-Israeli citizenship

The militant group Hamas has released American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander, who was being held in the Gaza Strip.

The news comes as an Israeli airstrike on a school converted into a shelter in northern Gaza has killed around 16 people, mostly women and children.

Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, said the release of Edan Alexander was done as a goodwill gesture towards the Trump administration, in an attempt to revive talks to end the war.

According to the emergency services of the Gaza Health Ministry, at least five children and four women were among the victims in the attack that took place in the Jabalia area. Dozens of others were injured.

The Israeli military has blamed Hamas for the civilian casualties, saying the group's fighters operate in densely populated civilian areas. There has been no official comment from the Israeli military on the latest attack.

The hostage release and the attack occurred on the eve of US President Donald Trump's visit to the Middle East, where he is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates this week.

After the end of a ceasefire two months ago, Israel has intensified its offensive in Gaza.

The ten-week blockade on food, medicine and other supplies is deepening the humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says over 50,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli offensive in 2023, which was launched in response to Hamas attacks on October 7.

Israel says 58 hostages remain in captivity, with about 23 believed to be still alive. Many of the 250 hostages seized by Hamas-led militants during the 2023 attack have been released under ceasefire agreements. /REL
