Former FBI chief under investigation after posting 4-digit code, Republicans

Former FBI Director James Comey is being investigated by the Secret Service after he published and then deleted a social media post that Republicans claimed was an incitement to violence against US President Donald Trump .

Comey posted a photo on Instagram of seashells spelling out the numbers "8647," with the caption, "Cute shell shapes during my walk on the beach."

The number 86 is a slang term whose definitions include “to reject” or “to get rid of,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which also notes that it has recently been used as a term meaning “to kill.”

Comey insisted he didn't know what the numbers meant, but Trump has disputed that.

It is known that he later deleted the post, writes the BBC.

"I didn't realize that some people associate those numbers with violence," he added.

"It never occurred to me, but I oppose violence of any kind, so I removed the post."

But Trump argued that "even a child knows what that means."

"This meant murder and it says it loud and clear," Trump said.

"Now, he wasn't very competent, but he was competent enough to know what he meant," Trump said.
