Iceland heads to referendum on EU membership

Iceland's Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, has announced the holding of a referendum on the country's possible membership in the European Union.

During a press conference in Poland, after meeting with her Polish counterpart Donald Tusk, Frostadóttir stated that in the coming months the government will work on preparing the referendum, which will focus on the possible resumption of membership negotiations with the European Union.

"Over the coming months we will prepare the referendum on the possible resumption of membership talks with the EU," she said.

Reykjavik suspended membership negotiations in 2013 after four years of talks with Brussels. However, the rising cost of living and the ongoing war in Ukraine have revived the Nordic country's interest in European integration, according to recent polls.
