"We are seriously at risk", NATO chief warns: Russia could attack us

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that Russia could be preparing for a direct confrontation with the Western alliance within the next five years.

During a speech at Chatham House in London, Rutte stressed the urgent need for a major step forward in NATO's collective defense, including accelerated rearmament and a significant increase in the defense budget.

He said NATO leaders are expected to agree this month to increase military spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), of which 3.5% will be essential spending on combat capabilities.

"This is not just about Ukraine. The danger will not disappear even when the war there ends," Rutte said, stressing that even if a peace deal is reached with Kiev, the Kremlin is likely to continue its path of militarization.

The proposed plan to strengthen defense includes a fivefold increase in air defense, thousands of new tanks, and millions of artillery shells to bolster reserves and keep pace with Russian production capacities.

Rutte's statements prompted an immediate reaction from Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused NATO of aggressive behavior, saying that "the alliance is showing itself as an instrument of confrontation and aggression."

According to estimates by Western military planners, Russia aims to maintain an active and experienced army of over 600,000 troops, spend about 6.5% of GDP on defense, and be able to threaten NATO's eastern flank before 2030.
