China accuses US of violating trade deal, warns of strong measures

China has accused the United States of serious violations of the trade agreement and warned that it will take strong measures to protect its interests.

China's Commerce Ministry said the US actions had "seriously damaged" the agreement reached during talks in Geneva last month, where the two countries agreed to reduce tariffs on goods imported from each other.

A Ministry spokesman added that the US actions had also violated the consensus reached in a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in January.

The comments follow Trump's remarks on Friday, in which he said China had "completely violated the deal with us." The US president did not provide details, but US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later clarified that China was not removing non-tariff barriers as agreed to in the deal.

Under the trade deal reached in May in Geneva, the US reduced tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China's tariffs on US goods fell from 125% to 10%.

Additionally, Beijing said the US violations included banning sales of chip design software to Chinese companies, warning against using chips made by Chinese tech giant Huawei, and canceling visas for Chinese students.

The agreement reached in Geneva was a surprise to many analysts, as the two sides seemed far apart on many trade issues.

This showed that during direct talks, Washington and Beijing could reach an agreement.

However, with the escalation of rhetoric, it is becoming increasingly clear that the current truce is fragile and that it will be extremely difficult to reach a long-term trade agreement.
