Hungarian PM: Hungary will execute international arrest warrant for Netanyahu

The winner of Hungary's parliamentary elections, Péter Májár, has announced that his country will rejoin the International Criminal Court and execute arrest warrants issued by the independent judicial body, including one for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to foreign media, outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced last year that Hungary was withdrawing from the ICC after welcoming Netanyahu to Budapest. The decision was due to take effect on June 2, 2026.

After his victory in parliamentary elections on April 12, the Hungarian immediately announced that Hungary would return to the ICC. However, according to an Israeli report of his phone conversation with Netanyahu, he invited him to Budapest on October 23, for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 uprising against the Soviets.

When asked by a journalist about this contradiction, Magjari explained that he had invited all the leaders he spoke to on the phone.

"If a country is a member of the ICC and a wanted person passes through its territory, then he should be detained, I don't need to say everything on the phone. I take it for granted that every head of state knows these laws," he added.

His aides are considering how the next government will suspend the withdrawal process from the ICC before June 2, he said. The Hague-based ICC has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. Mayar also announced that the first session of the new parliament will be held on the weekend of May 9-10, when he will also be sworn in.
