War in the Middle East, the Greek government intervenes with measures on fuel prices

Seeing an increase in fuel prices within a few days and not only, in the context of international tensions and the crisis in the Middle East, the Greek government announced emergency measures to curb them as well as the phenomena of unjustified profits.
The main measure is to place a ceiling on the profit margin for fuel, food and basic consumer goods, as announced by Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis during his emergency meeting with the country's president.
"We are sending a clear message that this economic turbulence should not lead to speculation for profit, which would exacerbate an already existing problem. Therefore, today maximum profit margin limits are announced for fuel and supermarket products," said Prime Minister Mitsotakis.
Later, in a press conference, the country's Deputy Prime Minister, along with the Minister of Environment and Energy and the Minister of Development, specifically clarified that in the fuel sector, the profit margin in wholesale trade will not exceed 5 cents per liter, while for retail outlets the limit is set at 12 cents per liter. Special rules are also foreseen for islands, where transportation costs are higher.
"From the entry into force of the Normative Act today until June 30, 2026, a ceiling is placed on the profit margin for fuels," said Development Minister Stavros Papastavros.
The measures will also apply to supermarkets, the food industry and distribution companies, while fines for violators could reach up to 5 million euros, depending on the size of the company and the illegal profit.
The Ministry of Development also published a detailed list of products for which a ceiling on the profit margin will be set, which include, among others, rice, bread, cheese, pasta, eggs, milk, yogurt, frozen vegetables, oil, sugar and coffee.
Authorities emphasize that there is no supply problem in the market, but warn that controls will be increased to prevent price speculation, especially in energy and basic products.
