Marco Rubio: The US does not want a dependent or submissive Europe, but a strong

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States does not want a "dependent" or "submissive" Europe, but a strong and equal partner, a day after his speech at the Munich Security Conference.

During a press conference in Bratislava, alongside Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Rubio stressed: "We do not want Europe to be dependent and we do not want it to be subservient to the United States. We want a partner."

He underlined that it is in the strategic interest of the US to have "a strong Europe", at a time when transatlantic relations are going through a period of tension and uncertainty.

In a speech delivered on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio called on European countries to align themselves with President Donald Trump's vision for global order and to defend, according to him, Western civilization, which he considers threatened by mass migration and cultural and industrial decline.

However, he stressed that Washington aims to renew ties with a "strong" Europe.

Rubio arrived in Slovakia today for a several-hour visit, before traveling to Budapest, Hungary - two Central European countries led by close Trump allies.

During the press conference, he added that President Trump wants to strengthen relations with Central European countries, considering them key partners in the new Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
