After Instagram, Turkey also blocks the game network 'Roblox': We must protect our children
As re-elected and embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has taken action by blocking social network X for ten days, Turkey appears to have joined in with another cyber crackdown.
After having previously closed Instagram, Turkey announced that it has also blocked access to the online game platform Roblox, with the motive that "its content is inappropriate and may lead to the abuse of children in the country".
"Our country is obliged to ensure the protection of our children. Using technology in a negative way is never acceptable," said Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in the city of Adana launched an investigation into Roblox, which eventually led to nationwide restrictions, Reuters reports.
A spokesman for the penalized platform, which hosts video games created by other users, said it would cooperate with local Turkish authorities and hoped the problem would be resolved soon.
The ban comes five days after Turkey decided to block the social network Instagram, which is used by 57.1 million people in the country, a very high figure (Turkey is known as a country with 80 million inhabitants).
According to the Turkiye Today portal, the authorities in Ankara were allegedly unhappy with the fact that Instagram restricted posts related to the slain leader of the Palestinian movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh. This restriction caused resentment in Turkey, as this ban was described as censorship.
