Sarkozy in prison for 20 days, it is revealed that the US ambassador to France

The US Ambassador to France, Charles Kushner, requested permission to visit former President Nicolas Sarkozy in prison during the latter's brief period of detention, according to the Paris Court of Appeal, which granted his approval.

However, the meeting never took place, a source close to Sarkozy said, although Kushner and the former president later met outside prison, according to Reuters.
Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, was released last month after three weeks in prison as he appeals a conviction for conspiracy related to fundraising from Libya. He has repeatedly denied all charges.

Kushner, whose son, Jared, is married to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump, has caused a stir since he arrived in Paris as ambassador earlier this year.

He himself previously served a prison sentence in the US for illegal campaign donations and tax evasion, among other charges. In 2020, he was pardoned by President Trump.

It is not known why Kushner requested to meet with Sarkozy, who was also visited in prison by French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin.

A source close to Sarkozy declined to provide further details, saying only that the former president plans to write about the episode in his upcoming book, "Diary of a Prisoner," which is expected to be released next week.

Recall that in August, Kushner was summoned to the French Foreign Ministry after publishing an open letter to President Emmanuel Macron, claiming that France had not done enough to stop anti-Semitic violence.

In September, when a court in Paris ruled that Sarkozy should be imprisoned, the former French head of state declared that the decision undermined the rule of law and citizens' trust in justice.
