NATO chief: United States not expected to suddenly withdraw from Europe

The United States does not plan to withdraw "suddenly" from the European continent and remains fully committed to the Atlantic Alliance, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte assured today.

"They are not expected to suddenly reduce their presence in Europe," Rutte told reporters, shortly before the start of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

However, he acknowledged that US attention is now turning to China and other countries and that Europe needs to prepare for this.

"We know that America, as a superpower, has to deal with many scenarios. It makes sense to have this discussion, and we have been doing it for many years."

"Americans have been asking European NATO members and Canada to spend more on their countries' defense since the end of the Cold War. But we need even more," he said.
