The mysterious French cave surprises researchers with the history hidden inside

A group of researchers said they descended into what was thought to be an inaccessible point of an underground cave in France with high-tech tools, but were shocked to discover that people had been there before.
The mysterious system of underground caves more than 50 km long turned out to be explored by humans until about 8,000 years ago, and researchers do not know how to explain how primitive people got there.
The entrance to the Saint-Marcel Cave in France has been inhabited by humans since the Middle Paleolithic period, but new evidence now shows that even the parts blocked by the brutal terrain were explored by humans.
Researchers led by geomorphologist Jean-Jacques Delannoy found broken stalagmites a few miles past the entrance, signaling the presence of humans.
To discover this, the group used powerful lights and high-tech equipment, none of which had been invented at the time of the first explorers, writes the DailyStar network.
Delanoy said in his presentation: “The discovery and the fact that the structures are about 8,000 years old is something extraordinary. This raises doubts about prehistoric people's gallery-exploring skills and their mastery of lighting.
The area of interest for the group has been known for some time, therefore the broken mineral deposits on the floors have aroused interest".
Breaking pieces of the cave into trophy shapes was often done by 19th-century explorers, Science Alert reports, and broken stalagmites are believed to fall into this category.
The researchers also used the technique of uranium dating, indirectly revealing that the earliest stalagmites were broken about 10,000 years ago, while the latest 3,000 years ago.
"The evidence points to prehistoric human activity in the cave of Saint-Marcel, which invites us to study these societies, their use of caves and activity in deep terrains," the scientific report said.
