White House proposes drastic cuts to State Department and closure of some diplomatic missions

The White House Office of Management and Budget has proposed cutting the State Department's budget by nearly 50%, closing a number of diplomatic missions abroad, reducing diplomatic staff, and eliminating funding for nearly all international organizations, including the United Nations, most of its agencies, and NATO headquarters.
The proposal, which was proposed to the State Department last week and is still in its first phase, is not expected to pass either the Department or Congress, which is ultimately required to vote on the federal budget in the coming months, the AP reported.
Officials have said the proposal must go through several stages of review before reaching lawmakers, who have in the past rejected White House budget requests.
President Donald Trump's administration has taken several moves to cut jobs and cut funding for many agencies.
