Russian tycoon ends life after being implicated in Epstein case

Russian tycoon Umar Dzhabrailov, who in the past had called Ghislaine Maxwell his "soul mate" and whose name had appeared in files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, was found dead with a gunshot to the head at around 3am on Monday.

The news was reported by Russian media outlet Kommersant, which cited police sources describing the incident as a possible suicide. A Luger pistol was found near the 67-year-old's body. According to the same sources, Dzhabrailov, who had attempted suicide in 2020, did not leave a suicide note.

His name came back into the spotlight after the release of emails from the US Department of Justice regarding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

In an email dated May 24, 2001, Dzhabrailov wrote to Maxwell: “Dear Ghislaine, I have returned from London and am planning to come to Moscow. I really want to see you, but I need to know exactly when you will arrive, because I want to take care of you and make all the arrangements for your reception.”

Maxwell responded the next day, announcing that she, Epstein, and a man named Tom would be traveling to Moscow the following week.

After Maxwell's conviction for aiding Epstein in the sexual abuse of underage girls, Dzhabrailov had publicly stated: "I knew Epstein. He was introduced to me by Ghislaine Maxwell, one of my soulmates. But I could never have imagined that they were partners and that she was involved in finding these girls."

Dzhabrailov, born in Chechnya, was the owner of the Radisson Slavyanskaya Hotel & Business Center in Moscow and the director of a company that oversees Russian shopping malls. He also served as a senator in the Federation Council for the North Caucasus Republic from 2004 to 2009.

Russian authorities are continuing investigations to clarify the full circumstances of his death.
