Died on Titan submarine, family of French explorer sues OceanGate
The family of Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a world-renowned French explorer and one of the people who died aboard the tourist submarine Titan, has filed a more than $50 million lawsuit against OceanGate, accusing it of negligence.
Nargeolet was among five people who died when the submarine exploded during a trip to the famous Titanic sinking site in the North Atlantic in June 2023.
Known as the "Titanic Lord", Nargeolet participated in 37 dives at the site of the Titanic, the most of any diver in the world. He was considered one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about the sinking of the Titanic.
The lawsuit also alleges that OceanGate intentionally concealed problems with the Nargeolet submarine, even though he was assigned a crew member by the company. Nargeolet would not have taken part in the trip if he had been aware of Titan's affairs, family members claim.
Titan made its final dive on June 18, 2023, and lost contact with its support ship about two hours later. After a search and rescue mission that attracted worldwide attention, the wreckage of the Titan was found on the ocean floor about 300 meters from the Titanic.
