Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance, will travel to Greenland this week, as President Donald Trump clings to the idea of ​​a US annexation of the strategic, semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Vance will visit Greenland on Thursday with a U.S. delegation to visit historic sites, learn about the territory's heritage and participate in the national sled dog race, the White House said in a statement. The delegation will return to the United States on March 29. White House national security adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will also travel to Greenland, visiting a U.S. military base in Greenland, a U.S. official said.

Speaking to the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, Greenland's Prime Minister, Múte Egede, said Waltz's visit was a "provocation".

“The only purpose is to show us a show of strength and the signal is not to be misunderstood,” he said. “He is Trump’s confidential and closest advisor, and his presence alone in Greenland will certainly make Americans believe in Trump’s mission and the pressure will increase after the visit.

The governments of Greenland and Denmark have expressed opposition to such a move. Greenland's government, which is in a caretaker period following a March 11 general election won by a party that favors a slow approach to independence from Denmark, did not respond to requests for comment.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a written statement reacting to news of the visit that “this is something we take seriously.” She said Denmark wants to cooperate with the U.S., but it must be cooperation based on “fundamental rules of sovereignty.” She added that the dialogue with the U.S. regarding Greenland would take place in close coordination with the Danish government and the future government of Greenland.
