Visit to Moscow, Vučić: I hope the EU punishes me, not Serbia!

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has stated that he expects consequences for his participation in the Russian military parade, but that he expects the European Union to punish him personally, not Serbia.

"I am convinced that Serbia will remain on the European path. If the EU wants to punish someone, let it punish me. I will accept the punishment and I will ask that the entire country not be punished," Vučić told Serbian media.

Vučić arrived in Moscow today via Bulgaria, Turkey and Azerbaijan, after Latvia and Lithuania did not allow his plane to pass over their territory.

"We traveled through Bulgaria, Turkey and Azerbaijan, and when we were allowed the corridor, we continued our way. I arrived in Moscow where I was received by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aleksandar Grushko, one of the most important figures in Russian diplomacy," Vučić said.

He added that some members of the Serbian government had suggested reciprocal measures against Latvia and Lithuania, but that he was against such action.

The Serbian president also stressed that he is proud that, as the president of a country whose people fought against fascism, he will participate in the military parade on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II.

"The Serbian people have no reason to be ashamed, but should be proud of their fight against fascism. If any people has the right to be proud of the fight against fascism, it is the Serbian people," said the head of the Serbian government.

He added that tomorrow he will meet with Russian Patriarch Kirill, to whom he will present a decoration, as well as with the President of Kazakhstan, Zhomart Tokayev, and on Friday, after the parade, first with the President of China, Xi Jinping, and then with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

Vučić stated that he will discuss with Putin a new agreement on natural gas and the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), on which the United States has imposed sanctions due to its Russian ownership, as well as political cooperation at the international level.
