Zelensky visits the front line, amid speculation about the fate of the senior

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Ukrainian troops on the front line in the country's southeast and handed out medals, his office said on Sunday.

His visit came at a time of speculation that the famous Ukrainian army chief could be sacked.

"I have the honor to be here today, to support the fighters and to reward them. They face a difficult and critical mission to repel the enemy and protect Ukraine," Zelensky said in a statement after visiting the Zaporizhzhia region.

The Ukrainian presidency said Zelensky visited Ukrainian military positions near the village of Robotine, which is located almost on the front line.

The southeastern part of Robotine was liberated at the end of August during the Ukrainian counter-offensive against Russian forces.

Zelensky visited the battlefront at a time of uncertainty over the fate of Ukrainian army chief Valeriy Zaluzhny.

According to Reuters, the Ukrainian government notified the White House on Friday that it plans to fire its top military commander, who is leading the fight against Russian occupation forces.

Doubts about the dismissal of Zaluzhny, who has been at odds with Zelensky on a number of issues, follow last year's Ukrainian counter-offensive, which failed to liberate most of the territory occupied by Russia.

Known as " the iron general ", Zaluzhny is extremely popular./ REL
