Romanian elections, first exit polls: Liberal centrist candidate Nicușor Dan

Independent centrist candidate and mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, is expected to be the new president of Romania, according to initial exit polls.

The 55-year-old mathematician won over far-right candidate George Simion by a score of 55% to 45%, according to data released Sunday evening.

Turnout in the second round of the elections was massive, reaching 64.5%, significantly higher than the 53% that was in the first round.

Official results are expected within the next few hours from the Central Electoral Authority of Romania.

In his first statements after the publication of the exit polls, Nicușor Dan praised the "impressive resilience" of Romanian society, which - as he said - requires profound changes.

"This victory shows that Romanians chose dialogue instead of hatred," the independent candidate with a liberal profile emphasized, adding that society sent a strong message in support of democracy, prudence and institutional reforms.
