"Surrender the Municipality or you will rot in prison"/ Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama has described the European Commission's progress report as a reflection of the government's work, stating that Albania has made great progress on its path towards the European Union. During a joint press conference with EU Ambassador Sofia Moreira de Sousa, Rama said that the report clearly shows the work of the institutions, but claimed that citizens are unable to see this progress due to what he described as channels of disinformation.

The clash between Prime Minister Edi Rama and Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj was one of the topics the head of government was asked about during the press conference following the submission of the European Commission's progress report. But Rama chose not to give a direct answer, describing the conflict as an issue of no importance to him.

"They are like the noises of cars coming and going on the Boulevard. As important as they are for us who are here, what you asked is just as important to me ," Rama said, avoiding comments on the clash with Veliaj and the latter's accusations from prison.

The prime minister's statement comes as the relationship between two important figures in the Socialist Party has publicly escalated, following Veliaj's claims that Rama has conveyed requests and messages to him through the Minister of Justice, Toni Gogu.

Veliaj claimed that during the meeting, Gogu had conveyed three requests that, according to him, came from the prime minister: to accept involvement in organizing or financing student protests and the "Flamingot" movement, to delegate the leadership of the Tirana Municipality to Arbër Hajdari, and to renounce legal representation by lawyer Plarent Ndreca.

According to the version published by Veliaj, if he did not accept these demands, the charges against him could be aggravated, including that of violating the constitutional order. He also claimed that he was told that he could face a long prison sentence.

On November 4, through his lawyer Plarent Ndreca, Veliaj also made public several pages from his personal diary, where he had written responses to requests he claims were forwarded to him by the minister. In the published notes, he categorically denied having any connection to the protests and opposed the possibility of delegating the management of the municipality to Arbër Hajdari.

"You threw it at me once, shame on you, but the second time, shame on me," was one of Veliaj's messages regarding the refusal to delegate powers. He also defended lawyer Plarent Ndreca, writing that he had been by his side during this period and that he had no intention of giving up on him.

Veliaj declared that he would not bow down or be blackmailed, while denying the accusations of involvement in the anti-government protests. The clash was also accompanied by other developments, as lawyer Ndreca announced that the mayor had been transferred to the hospital premises of the Fier prison due to a fractured leg, while raising concerns about delays in conducting medical examinations.
