Agriculture in crisis/ Farmers in Kallm, Fier abandon land and livestock, products remain without a market

Once one of the areas with the most developed agriculture and livestock in Fier, the village of Kallm is today facing a deep crisis in the agricultural sector.
The increase in the prices of fuel, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, as well as the lack of a market for the sale of products, have forced farmers to significantly reduce the cultivated areas and the number of livestock.
Wheat and corn production, once a main source of income for families in the area, is now becoming a burden for farmers.
"We cultivate almost everything, wheat, corn, beans, alfalfa, we also have olives and vineyards. I applied for subsidies, but I did not benefit from them for agriculture. We have production, but we cannot sell it. My warehouse is full of wheat and corn. With 25 lek, I cannot sell it, while the fertilizers have increased a lot. We work in vain. I do not want to plant wheat anymore. We are pensioners, with 150 thousand lek a month we cannot even afford medicine. The state is bankrupting livestock and agriculture."
The problems are no less for livestock farmers. The lack of collection points, the low price and the difficulties in selling milk have caused many families to give up raising livestock.
"I deal with livestock, mainly goats. At first they told us they would take the milk, we took it to the factory two or three times and then they told us they would no longer collect it, because there was no sale. Now we use it for ourselves and sell some of it ourselves. I have never received subsidies for livestock. They have not registered all the livestock, some were left outside. With this income I cannot support my family, I am also on the list at the store."
"We also have livestock, but we don't receive subsidies because we have little land. This is not fair, but we have nowhere to claim our rights. We are reducing the areas because we have nowhere to take the wheat. Many farmers here have given up planting, while others have reduced the area."
Farmers warn that if the situation continues like this, Kallmi risks losing its agricultural and livestock tradition. As young people increasingly leave the village, the land that once provided a livelihood for dozens of families risks remaining uncultivated./ Top Channel
