"Corriere" / 3 thousand Italian pensioners choose Albania to live:
“In Albania with an untaxed Italian pension. Where a house by the sea costs 300 euros a month and you can go out for dinner for 15 euros”. With this title, the well-known Italian newspaper “Corriere del Mezzogiorno” has paid attention to the growing number of Italian pensioners who choose our country to live. What has lured Italian seniors to leave their country is explained by Carmine Ianpietro, 75 years old, president of the association of Italian pensioners in Albania.

Janpietro has been stationed in Durrës with his wife for more than 10 years. After more than 45 years of working as a mechanic in Puglia, he retired, but noticed that with the money he received, he could not make a living.

So, in 2015, for the first time, he packed his suitcases and camper van for a journey that is proving to be a never-ending journey back to his country of origin, settling in Durrës.

"Here in Albania, people live very well with an Italian pension," says Karmine, who adds that he didn't come here just for the taxes and expenses, but also for the tranquility he found and the wonderful landscape.

The elderly Italian says that he bought a house by the sea for only 300 euros per month and invites other retirees from his country to consider Albania as a place to spend quality time, underlining that "the day before he had dinner with his friends for only 15 euros, which does not happen in any other country in the world."

"The reason is not only economic, since the check sent here remains gross and no taxes are paid, but also because you feel safe. There are no petty crimes and in the evening you can walk around peacefully without fear of being robbed."

Iampetro says the number of Italian pensioners in Albania has grown exponentially over the last 3 years. “Before 2021, we were around 300. Today, according to the latest data from the registry of Italians living abroad, based on the law that allows European citizens who move to live in Albania for total exemption from pension taxes, we have reached almost 3 thousand.”

According to him, the exemption of pensioners from taxes is the main reason why so many pensioners are coming to Albania.

"In practice, if in Italy 1500 euros gross becomes 1150 net, here 1500 euros remain clean. And it's not just those with low incomes who come. There are many wealthy pensioners with over 50 thousand euros a year."

The 75-year-old indicates that Albania has also been affected by rising inflation, but nevertheless, with prices in the country, Italian pensioners can afford a more than dignified life while also having medical care.
