Hundreds of quintals of unsold agricultural products from farmers in the Maliqi area, mainly corn, potatoes, onions and wheat, which are the staple crops of farmers in this area.
Skënder Hamzaj is one of the potential farmers in the village of Drithas, who cultivates wheat and corn. He says he has more than 500 quintals of unsold corn, as well as large quantities of wheat in stock.
"There is no market demand. It's been a tough year this year, I think maybe the number of heads has decreased, but the weather, the snow alone increases demand. We have no choice. I don't understand wheat, it's not even mentioned. When I ask for wheat, only the millers take it, which is not worth it at that price," he said.
Robert Qeleshi is another potential farmer in the village of Zvirinë in the municipality of Maliq who, like many other farmers, has unsold produce.
"It depends on the market. Small traders who come in vans rarely come. They say the market is full but the price is 20 old lek for this onion. There is no demand and it is spoiling."
"The areas have not increased because most have emigrated for years. This year we don't know. Maybe it comes from abroad so the local product is not sold. The onion has good quality," he emphasized.
The head of the agricultural sector in the municipality of Maliq, Aurel Zenunllari, acknowledges the fact that a good portion of the products have remained unsold, but it is difficult to say if this has to do with imported products or if farmers have increased the area of agricultural crops.
"We have a problem with the sale of these products this season, there have been lower demands than in previous years and the price has not been favorable. It means that farmers are interested in selling the product, the quality is not lacking but the price brings problems with sales," he said,
In the Maliq field alone, about 4,000 hectares of corn are cultivated, 600 hectares of potatoes and corn, and 650 hectares of onions./ EuronewsAlbania
