The error occurred during a promotional campaign, where the exchange planned to reward each customer with a 2,000 won bonus. Instead, each customer received 2,000 bitcoins. Bithumb clarified that the incident was not the result of a cyberattack and did not affect the security of the system or customers’ assets.
After the misallocation, the price of bitcoin fell by 17% to 81.1 million won, but later recovered to 104.5 million won.
Bithumb is the second largest cryptocurrency exchange platform in South Korea, after Upbit.
