Deadly storm in the Iberian Peninsula, a firefighter dies in Portugal, thousands

A Portuguese firefighter lost his life today during a reconnaissance and monitoring patrol on the banks of a river, in the Campo Maior area, in the Portalegre district, Portugal's National Civil Protection Authority announced.

According to local media, the 46-year-old firefighter was swept away by the current while trying to cross a flooded area. He is the first victim of Storm Marta, which hit Portugal and neighboring Spain today.

The past week has been particularly difficult for Portugal, as strong winds from Storm Christine killed five people, while heavy rains from Storm Leonardo claimed another victim on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, both Portugal and Spain are facing intense rainfall and strong winds, raising fears of major flooding and significant property damage.

In southern Spain's Andalusia, the ground is already saturated from recent rainfall and the region has been placed on orange alert again. According to the Spanish meteorological service AEMET, the area is currently the epicenter of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The President of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno, described the situation as "extremely complicated", stating that dozens of roads have been blocked, rail traffic has been disrupted in many segments and over 11,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the affected areas.

Authorities warn that economic damage from storms Leonardo and Marta is expected to reach millions of euros, especially in the agriculture and road infrastructure sectors. The Andalusia region is expected to request assistance from the central government and the European Union Solidarity Fund.
