Work after retirement, necessity or choice? Albania, among records for the

Demographic changes are reshaping the workforce of every country, and Albania is no exception. With the aging population and changing birth rates, the labor market is also transforming, especially in terms of the age of those participating in it.

In this context, it is clear that population aging is becoming increasingly visible at a global level. Previous data analyzed by Scan Intel shows that in 2023, the age group 60 years and older constituted 23.5% of the population in Albania. A percentage that speaks volumes about the changes taking place in the country's demographic structure.

This time, Scan Intel has focused on a specific indicator: When do we stop working? The question often associated with retirement age takes on another dimension when we look at real employment rates. We focused on the over-65 age group to see how many of them continue to be active in the labor market, beyond the official retirement age.

INSTAT data shows that at the end of 2024, the employment rate for this age group reached 23.2%, a significant increase compared to 2023, when this rate averaged 17%.

Looking in more detail, by gender, men lead with an employment rate of 29.4%, while for women this figure is lower, at 17.4%. However, significantly higher than the rate of previous years.

From 2012 onwards, employment for people over 65 has increased significantly, reaching record levels, for both genders.

In the comparative analysis of European countries, Albania is positioned among the countries with the highest employment rate for retirement age, immediately after Iceland and Estonia.

But why this high rate, and above all, increasing? Part of the answer lies in the fact that many pensioners are unable to cover their basic needs with pension income alone. Equally important is the share of self-employed people in the agricultural sector, where the elderly continue to contribute. Another factor is the lack of labor in some sectors, which "pushes" many people to stay in work even after retirement age./ SCAN
